As a member of the inaugural Australian MTB team to travel to the World Champs USA in 1989, Scott lived, trained and worked in an area of California near Edwards Air Force Test Base and Scale Composites (now Virgin spaceship makers). While there Scott met aircraft Engineers through the local bike scene, who instructed him on the black art of Carbon/Kevlar composites and how this new material could be used in bikes.

Originally they were using traditional steel construction for frames, but upon returning to Australia Scott was further instructed by Ciba Geigy/Hexcell on the use of composites in racing yachts, V8 supercars and aerospace, which was then adapted to the prototype suspension bikes that he and brother Gavin were designing and building.

During the 1990’s suspension systems, frames and prototype time trial bikes were all scratch built. In the late 90’s enquiries started coming in about repairs of these new carbon fiber bikes, wheels and parts.

2003 Scott joined the Aerospace Industry, completing an Aircraft Maintenance Apprenticeship at Sikorsky Helicopters, adapting his composite skills.

2007 Scott started work with Eurocopter and was factory trained in France on carbon fibre repairs. On return to Australia, Scott was sent through out Australia for repairs on Eurocopter aircraft and to instruct the Australian Army, Navy & Airforce on how to repair and maintain their new helicopters.

Since 1990 Finlay Composites has been building and repairing MTB and Road frames, carbon wheels, handle bars, forks, seat posts, car parts and television industry gear.
